The Cincinnati Nature Center’s Rowe Woods harbors a rich
mosaic of natural and maintained landscapes, including an
Old-Growth Forest remnant that stands as an increasingly unique
and rare natural feature in southwest Ohio. Under contract with
the Cincinnati Nature Center, the Center for Applied Ecology
conducted an ecological assessment of Rowe Woods to document the
preserve’s natural features and provide recommendations for
long-term management.
Forest
community types were field-delineated and mapped using GIS.
Ecological quality of the forest was assessed using several
criteria, including forest-type, forest age, forest structure,
amount of human disturbance, native plant diversity, coverage of
invasive-exotic plants, presence of unique or rare species, size
of the area, and presence and quality of forest buffer. Based on
the results, specific recommendations were made for natural
areas management, prioritization, and restoration. The Center
continues to assist the Cincinnati Nature Center in the
management of their forestlands. |
