** For students who reside in Kentucky, there is a statewide General Education Transfer Policy. The policy lets colleges and universities accept each other's general education requirements for transfer students. Courses that meet General Education Transfer Policy requirements are identified by each institution.

The Policy on General Education Transfer:

  • Emphasizes aspects of general education requirements that are common among public institutions in Kentucky, and encourages completion of approved AA/AS transfer programs;
  • Promotes the acceptability of general education credits as students transfer from one public institution to another; and
  • Enhances cooperation among institutions with respect to academic advising for undergraduates who plan to transfer from one public institution to another.

The Kentucky Transfer Policy establishes two transfer components: the General Education Core Component and the Specialty Component. The 48 semester hour General Education Core Component provides a broad background of general education courses. The component is comprised of a 33 semester hour core component and a 15 semester hours block of unspecified general education courses.

General Education Component (48 semester hours) is made up of two sections, the General Education Core (33 semester hours) and the Specialty Group (15 institutional specific semester hours).

Student Responsibility and Access to Transfer Information

  • The General Education Transfer Policy applies to students who are accepted for admission into one of KY's public higher education institutions. Students planning to transfer should be aware of the admission requirements of the institution into which they intend to transfer. Transfer certifications noted on a student's transcript will only be applicable upon admission into the receiving institution.
  • Students are encouraged to complete their lower division general education requirements during the first two years of study and to plan their transfer by working with their advisor, reviewing institutional catalogs, and using the Course Applicability System to determine how their coursework will transfer (WWW.ky.transfer.org/cas/index.jsp).
  • Since the provisions of this policy address only institution-wide lower division general education requirements, students are advised to be aware of the general education requirements of the college or school within the university and the general education requirements of the degree program to which they plan to transfer.

The 48 semester hours include the 33-semester hour Core Transfer Component and the 15-semester hour Specialty Block. A minimum grade of "D-" is required for students to be awarded transfer credit at NKU.

Students may be required to earn additional general education credits for specific majors.

Core Component Certified (33 semester hours)

A student transferring from a Kentucky public institution will be awarded 33 semester hours of general education transfer credit at NKU if "Core Component Certified." Students must complete all five specified categories and be in good academic standing at the sending institution. For more information regarding NKU transfer policies, see http://www.nku.edu/~admitnku/transfer_services/home.htm. Bachelor's Program Transfer Specialty Component Policy (Under Review for Updates) The Bachelor's Program Transfer Specialty Component policy allows for the ease of transfer of course work within a student's major. Students who are "General Education Certified" under the Kentucky General Education Transfer policy (completed all categories, and have at least 48 semester hours in general education) are eligible for evaluation of credit within bachelor's program transfer frameworks. The Transfer Frameworks identifies at least 12 semester hours in addition to general education courses that may be taken at one Kentucky public institution and transferred to another public institution to satisfy major requirements. Students who are planning to transfer to another public Kentucky college or university should work closely with their adviser, as well as with the institution to which they plan to transfer, in order to ensure the completion of all necessary requirements.

For more information and a breakdown of the transfer framework for all Kentucky Programs for all state institution visit Kentucky Council for Postsecondary Education web site at http://www.cpe.state.ky.us/going2/going2_transfer_planning.asp or contact our admissions office.
