The Citizens'
Police Academy is an
educational program designed to give the public a working knowledge of
the Northern Kentucky University Police Department's personnel and
policies. The academy consists of a series of classes held one night
each week for 3 hours. The instruction is comprehensive, covering a
different area of the police department each week.
Officers,
supervisors and personnel assigned to the particular divisions conduct
each instructional block. The Citizens' Police Academy was created in
order to provide enough information to participating citizens so that
they may make informed judgments about the police department and police
activity. It is further hoped that the instruction will increase public
awareness in order to dispel suspicions and misconceptions and to
increase police community rapport through this education process. The
department, in turn, becomes more aware of the feelings and concerns of
the community from participant interaction and input.
The Citizens'
Police Academy is generally held
during the Spring and Fall semesters. The academy covers a wide variety of topics, such as Criminal
Investigations, Patrol Operations, Communications, Crime Prevention,
Courts and their functions, Defensive Tactics and Firearms Training.
Instruction in these and other topics consist of lectures,
demonstrations, tours and hands-on activities.
