05.07.03Questions: Answer two of the following (roughly two pages per essay, typed). Turn in by midnight Wednesday the 7th (by email, or at my office at LA 240, or in my mailbox at the end of the hall).

How do Hume and Kant differ on their accounts of the nature of morality?

How does Kant's account of necessity (in science and philosophy) differ from the account of previous empiricists and rationalists?

What different contributions to knowledge does the mind make in the views of Kant and Hume?


04.16.03Write a short essay on one of the following:

(1) How does Hume understand the nature of cause and effect (necessary connection)?
(2) Compare Hume and Descartes on the nature of the self.
(3) Compare Hume and Locke on personal identity.
(4) Compare Hume and Locke on freedom.


04.02.03Write essays for TWO of the Following:

1. What important basic commitments underlie the difference between Locke?s Empiricism and Leibniz?s Rationalism?

2. How do Locke and Leibniz differ in their theories about essential properties?

3. How do Locke and Leibniz differ in their theories about freedom?

4. How do Locke and Leibniz differ on the nature of individual persons?

In your essays demonstrate your understanding the relevant issues, arguments, objections, and positions that we discussed in class.


02.26.03Write a couple of pages on ONE of the following: (A) Critically discuss Locke’s objection to the doctrine of innate ideas. (B) Critically discuss Locke’s version of Compatibilism about freedom or liberty. (C) Compare and contrast Locke’s view of substance with the view of Descartes or Spinoza.
02.19.03Write a two page essay for (each of) two of the following:

1. In what ways (what concepts, issues, methods, assumptions) can we say that Spinoza’s views are extensions of Descartes’?

2. Compare the philosophical role that God plays in both Descartes’ and Spinoza’s thought.

3. What does each philosopher take substance to be and how does that concept figure into their theories about the mind and the physical world.

4. What common views do the two philosophers maintain about the nature and scope of knowledge?

In your essays demonstrate your understanding the relevant issues, arguments, objections, and positions that we discussed in class.


02.05.03Write a 1-2 page typed double-spaced essay in response to ONE of the following questions. Demonstrate to me that you understand Descartes' positions, his arguments for those positions, and the critical comments we raised in class. A. Critically discuss one of Descartes’ arguments for God; or B. Critically discuss Descartes’ arguments for Dualism; or C. Critically discuss the role of God in Descartes' views about knowledge.
