PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT
Statement of Policy
All policies in the Personnel Policy and Procedure Manual are applicable to regular, part-time staff employees, except those relating to "Leaves and Absences" (F) and "Benefits and Other Services" (H).
The following policies are designed to establish equity and uniformity relative to these two areas as they pertain to regular, part-time employment.
Appointment Definitions
P 2.1
Each staff member is designated as either a regular or temporary employee. An employee can be employed on a full-time or part-time basis in either of these categories.
P 2.2
A regular staff employee is defined as:
(1) One whose employment is expected to continue beyond one year, and
(2) One whose regular schedule is 20 hours or more each week.
P 2.3
A part-time staff employee is defined as one who works less than 37 ½ hours a week on a regularly scheduled basis.
P 2.4
Unless otherwise indicated, to be eligible for the benefits, services and leaves described hereinafter, a part-time staff member must be a regular employee, as defined at P 2.2 above.
PLEASE NOTE: FOR PURPOSES OF SUCCINCTNESS, MASCULINE PRONOUNS ARE USED THROUGHOUT SECTION P. UNLESS THE CONTEXT CLEARLY INDICATES THE CONTRARY, SUCH MASCULINE PRONOUNS ARE INTENDED TO REFER TO BOTH MALES AND FEMALES.
Group Life Insurance
Regular, part-time employees are not eligible for the Life Insurance plan.

Group Medical Insurance
All regular, part-time employees are eligible for the University's Group Medical Insurance Plan.

Group Total Disability
Regular, part-time employees who work less than 32 hours per week are not eligible for Group Total Disability. Should however, a full-time employee enrolled in the program subsequently have a reduction in work schedule to not less than 20 hours a week, that employee will remain in the program.

Kentucky Employees' Retirement System
Regular, part-time staff employees who work an average of 100 hours or more per month are mandatorily included in this retirement system.

TIAA-CREF Retirement
Regular, part-time employees are not eligible for the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA)/College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF) retirement program.

Supplemental Retirement Annuities
Regular, part-time employees are not eligible for the TIAA/CREF Supplemental Retirement Annuities Program.

Tuition Waiver
Northern Kentucky University provides a tuition waiver plan to regular, part-time employees who desire to further their education. Provisions of the plan are as follows:
(a) Undergraduate courses: tuition may be waived in an amount not to exceed the normal tuition cost of three (3) hours of undergraduate credit per semester.
(b) Graduate courses: tuition may be waived in an amount not to exceed the normal tuition cost of two (3) hours of graduate credit per semester.
(c) Undergraduate and Graduate courses: if an employee registers for both undergraduate and graduate courses, the maximum tuition which may be waived may not exceed the normal tuition cost of three (3) hours of undergraduate credit per semester.
(d) For purposes of tuition waiver, all summer sessions combined are considered as one semester.
If an employee registers for more hours than the maximum for which tuition may be waived, the excess tuition must be paid by the employee.

Credit Union
All regular, part-time employees are eligible to join the Kentucky Educators' Association Uni-Serv VI Federal Credit Union.

United States Savings Bonds
All regular, part-time employees are eligible to purchase savings bonds.

Kentucky Deferred Compensation
All regular, part-time employees are eligible for the Kentucky Deferred Compensation Plan.

Blood Bank
All regular, part-time employees are eligible for the Advance Deposit Blood Donor Group.

Social Security
All regular, part-time employees are covered under the Social Security program.

Worker's Compensation
All regular, part-time employees are covered under the Worker's Compensation program.

Unemployment Compensation
All regular, part-time employees are covered under the unemployment insurance program.

Orientation
Orientation for regular, part-time employees is currently conducted on a one-to-one basis by a member of Human Resources . Benefits are explained and the proper enrollment cards are issued. Any employment-related questions or concerns may be raised during the orientation.

Parking Permits
All regular, part-time employees who operate a motor vehicle on the NKU campus must abide by the parking rules and regulations.

University Identification Card
All regular, part-time employees may obtain a University Identification card.

University Bookstore
Regular, part-time employees are entitled to a ten (10) percent discount on purchases of $1.00 with the presentation of a valid identification card. Discounts do not apply to cigarettes by the carton, sale items, textbooks, or bookstore items invoiced at list price.

University Libraries
All University employees, including those on regular, part-time status, are eligible to use the full services of the University libraries.

Payroll Deductions
The University is required by law to make deductions from individual paychecks for Federal and State Income Taxes, City of Covington and Campbell or Kenton County Payroll Taxes, Social Security Tax, and Kentucky Employees' Retirement. No other deductions will be made unless authorized by the employee and agreed to by the University.

Temporary Disability
Regular, part-time employees are credited with 1/2 (one-half) day sick leave for each month of continuous employment. Section F 1 contains a complete description of employee entitlements and obligations for temporary sickness or incapacitation.

Holidays
Regular, part-time employees who are regularly scheduled to work on University holidays are entitled to the same benefits as regular, full-time employees. Policies and procedures relative to legal and special holidays are described at F 2.

Vacation Leave
All regular, part-time employees are entitled to 40 (forty) hours of paid vacation leave during each employment year. Payment in lieu of unused vacation is not authorized, and unused vacation may not be carried over into subsequent employment years. Vacations are to be scheduled at time that are mutually convenient to the employees and their supervisors.

Terminal Vacation
Policies and procedures relative to terminal vacation are described at F 4. Unless the context indicates otherwise, these apply to all employees, including those on regular, part-time status.

Personal Leaves
Policies and procedures relative to Personal Leaves are described at F 5. These apply to all employees, including those on regular, part-time status.

Military Leave - Extended Duty
A leave of absence for extended military services will be granted to regular, part-time employees. This leave will be without pay. All other provisions of this leave, described at F 6, also apply to regular, part-time employees.

Military Leave - Annual Training and Emergency Duty
Regular, part-time employees in the National Guard or in the reserve components of the naval, air or ground forces of the United States will be granted leave for training service requirements. Such leave for training duty will be limited to a maximum of 10 (ten) working days per year.
Regular, part-time staff members are also eligible for emergency duty leave.
All other provisions of these leaves, described at F 7, also apply to regular, part-time employees.

Funeral Attendance Absence
A regular, part-time staff employee may be allowed necessary absence with pay for attendance of funerals. Compensation while on such leave will be based on the number of hours the employee would regularly be scheduled to work. For those employees with work schedules that vary, Human Resources will work with the respective department heads to determine appropriate compensation for funeral attendance. At no time, however, will the employee be paid for more hours than he would regularly be scheduled to work. Section F 8 contains a complete description of employee entitlements and obligations relative to Funeral Attendance absence.

Court and Jury Duty
Jury Duty is recognized as a civic responsibility. Employees are encouraged to fulfill their obligations with regard to this service as a citizen of the community.
A regular, part-time employee will be granted time off with pay to serve on a jury, or to serve as a court witness when subpoenaed. Compensation will be based on the number of hours the employee would regularly be scheduled to work. For those employees with work schedules that vary, Human Resources will work the respective department heads to determine appropriate compensation. At not time, however, will the employee be paid for more hours than he would regularly be scheduled to work. Section F 9 contains a complete description of employee entitlements and obligations relative to Court and Jury Duty leave.

National, State and Local Elections
University employees are encouraged to exercise their voting rights on all national, state and local elections. Section F 10 contains a complete description of the employees' entitlements and obligations relative to voting in all national, state and local elections. Regular, part-time employees must be regularly scheduled to work on voting days in order to be compensated for time off.
