Program Bands

NKU's approval authority for a new program depends on whether the program falls within its band.  Proposals for new academic programs that fall within NKU's program band will be subject to a six-week public review by the chief academic officers of Kentucky's public institutions, the president of the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities, and others.  If there are no significant problems with the proposal after the six-week period, NKU may complete its internal process of program approval and subsequently implement the program.

Proposals for new programs falling outside NKU's band will be subject to the same process as well as full Council review.  The Council on Postsecondary Education retains approval authority for programs in the following areas:

• First-professional programs

• Engineering programs at the comprehensive institutions and engineering programs at the doctoral level at UK and UL

• Teacher and school personnel preparation programs

• Health-related programs above the baccalaureate level

• Associate degree programs at the four-year institutions

• Other programs falling outside each institution's negotiated program band

• CIP 44 - Public Administration and Services

• CIP 45 - Social Science and History

• CIP 51 - Health Professions and Related Sciences (at the bachelor's level)

• CIP 52 - Business Management and Administrative Services
